Vincent

Nineteen years old

The moment we got through the main mansion’s doors, I knew something was up. The Bianchi’s house was far more animated than I have ever seen it before—an odd occurrence, since Bianchi liked to keep this place and its inhabitants under lock and key at all times. Every time I had been invited here the mansion always seemed dark and filled with a stench of doom and despair. Even if Anna Maria kept each room lined with flowers, modern upscale furniture accompanied by light, billowy curtains on every window, the air itself was heavy and condensed—a clear indication of having The Butcher walking its corridors.

However, tonight it feels as if there is a nervous electricity in the atmosphere that I can’t pinpoint. The zealous sounds coming from the guests outside echo through the house, and for some odd reason, the clink of champagne flutes and vigorous celebratory chatter is unsettling, raising my alarm to stay as alert as possible to unseen dangers in every corner. I should be pleased that Bianchi tried, at least, to give Selene a party she is worthy of. Lord knows she’s never had one before, but the pit of my stomach feels hollow and dread nips at my ear to take caution.

I walk behind my uncle, with Pietro at my side, as we check the large white tented area in the back for our hosts. The party is in full swing, and the guests are all entertained with the live music and catered staff. My ears ring with the endless babble of everyone present, and all I really want is to set my eyes on the girl of the hour so this gnawing feeling I have can disappear.

It takes me but two seconds to see her in the arms of another. More puzzling still, she is on the dance floor with a well-known stranger that I had no inkling would even be on the guest list. I recognize him immediately from his campaign a few months back—our state senator no less. Twenty years Selene’s senior and old enough to be her father but, by the smitten expression on his face, that doesn’t seem to dismay him any as he falls all over his feet—obviously dazed by the girl he is dancing with.

I take a quick look around to do a thorough inventory of who is in attendance and verify that there are more unfamiliar, though far too recognizable, faces. Too many for this to be a coincidence.

What the fuck is going on?

I thought this was a famiglia affair. What are these normals doing here?

“Enough of this,” I hear my uncle snap under his breath. “Pietro, Vincent, come with me,” he orders and the tone in his voice is not of the man that raised me but of the boss I’ve come to know well.

Pietro frowns but does as he’s told, and I follow suit. My uncle stops at one of the caterers and grabs a glass of whiskey from the silver tray.

“Tell your employer that Salvatore Romano is waiting in his office for him.
